Social media takes on more than just the form of Twitter. There is communication media which takes the form of blogs where people can write what they want, where they want. Collaborations such as Wikipedia where people are able to add content if they know about a subject and multimedia like Flickr are also examples.
Entertainment networks and sports networks are seeing the value that networking and media has on their own websites as they allow the public to give their opinions on certain topics about celebrities, sports heroes and the state of the game that they love!
If you want to be a success in the marketing world then you need to recognize the power of Twitter and social media. Learn to use it to your advantage and you will soon have a very meaningful online presence.
