Affiliate programs have become one of the largest and most profitable entities around. Successful advertising gurus can command huge revenue by working in this industry. Few people would choose to argue with earning money by the bucketful doing something as simple and enjoyable as creating advertising campaigns.

The Internet has annihilated conventional barriers to several industries and sectors of business around the world. One such barrier is that of commercial communication, otherwise known as advertising. The online market presents something with which past eras are unfamiliar. As a result, the marketing industry has been transformed, and pushed forward into an age of technology. As a result, affiliate programs are now a widely accepted marketing method.

Affiliate programs run along the same fundamental principles as that of the standard media marketing. However, they do have some vastly different attributes to make them almost completely unique from the traditional associations of marketing. Apart from the obvious difference that it is an online campaign, affiliate programs are system based around commission and diversity.

The first fundamental distinction is the way in which Advertisers now pay for marketing their products or services. Instead of having to come up with a major allocation of funds prior to the marketing campaign, the Advertiser is only required to pay its Affiliates upon completion of a sale. What this means is that the Advertiser does not pay out of pocket for marketing. Rather, the costs of marketing are taken from the revenue produced by each sale. This gives the Affiliate additional incentive to promote the Advertiser’s offer.

The next distinction between traditional marketing and affiliate marketing, is the way in which the Advertiser’s business is promoted. Rather than calling up an advertising agency, or looking at traditional forms of advertising such as radio, t.v., magazines, flyers, billboards, etc., affiliate advertising is done via a network of websites and blogs which can span the world. The websites and blogs are those of the Affiliates. In exchange for a promise of commission, Affiliates place marketing materials on their websites and blogs. Once a sale is made via the Affiliate’s website or blog, a commission is earned by said Affiliate. Commissions are tracked by a URL which is unique to the specific affiliate. Thus, where traditional modes of advertising only spanned so far, affiliate programs allow the Advertiser to market their offers all around the world.

One thing that you will begin to notice more and more, is that Advertisers are utilizing a combination of traditional marketing methods, and affiliate programs. However, some of the more competitive industries, such as digital product sales have taken full advantage of affiliate programs. It is almost as though these programs have been tailor made for digital products. Since digital products do not have any additional cost of goods sold per sale, it is common for Affiliates to earn a high percentage of the revenue produced by each sale. Sometimes up to 80%. Consequently, digital product affiliate programs prove to be mutually beneficial to both Advertiser and Affiliate. The expansion of technology driven advertising has allowed both digital product sales and affiliate marketing to feed off of one another.

The advantage of Affiliate Programs, is that advertisers who join an Affiliate Network, they have no out of pocket marketing costs.
