Pressured on how meetings should be like when presenting something? Fret not because the key is not through hi-tech presentations but through good communication skills presented by you and your concept map. To become an effective presenter, you have to prepare well for your business meeting for it to become successful. For a very important meeting, one must take care of different strategies in order to let people understand the agenda. Meetings like these require that you set a fixed objective in order to solicit the participation of the members of the table who will be the judge of your work.

Software map can effectively introduce your ideas to different people inside and outside your organization and manage a room of facility details. With its powerful ability to share information towards other onlookers, software maps can organize and gather numerous pieces of conveyed information. Nobody in the room would like a disorganized presentation because it will broaden the nonsense discussion of things that you have deliberately said but has no meaning.

How should you utilize your mapping software as a prototype for the next meeting?

1. Determine the people who will attend your meeting. Who are the people who should be there? Who are the people who are involved in adding input for the needed project? Who are the decision-makers that need to add more comments about your map? Do you need consultants or other people outside the organization that can greatly contribute to your outline’s success? If all your answers are all positive, then you can start jotting down the different people inside and outside your org. Know the pertinent info about them.

2. Define objectives. Without objectives your plan will be chaotic. You have to polish certain objectives in order to aim at something at every end of a meeting. What should be the purpose of your meeting? What are your goals and future accomplishments? How should the outcome of your project look? Place every sound objective that you can think of in a separate branch or section of your map.

3. Know your facility or equipment needs. Branch out the facility needs of your organization. This should convey the different needs in your meeting. Consider if there are any participants that will use other presentation types like PowerPoint or MindManager for the brainstorming of the group. You can use your mapping software to be able to define different needs visually, support any need for teleconference, arrangements for lunch and so much more. This is also meant to save time efficiently without thinking of the fuss or delaying the meeting because of insufficiencies.

4. Define the important items of agenda. If you already have an objective, you can now drive your members to create agenda for your meeting. List the topics that are needed to be discussed and who should lead the discussion for a particular segment. Place the different agendas in a separate branch of your map. Be sure that the people whom you have placed on that position are effective enough to do the discussion. Their equipments needed must also be consistent with the manner of how they are presenting their outlines.

By using the mind mapping software, you can organize and structure almost all your business meetings. Mind mapping is a great tool to be able to streamline your business work flow and keep myriad of data in a well-organized form.

Road Sign Ahead: Signs of Economic Recession

May 2, 2009 by Bobbie McKee

An economic recession is defined by a negative growth in gross domestic product for two consecutive quarters. In other words, the gross domestic products are decreasing in production. Recession is a national or world even regional event.

Economic recession lasts from six months until a year or two, which could be the worst time frame for a recession. Based on the experience of the United States with its last three recessions, the labor- market recession would last between three to four years. (Schmitt and Baker, 2008) with the actual recession only happening for more than a year and a half. The effects of a recession could be felt longer than the actual span of the recession itself.

There are several telltale signs that a nation or region is experiencing economic recession. MarketWatch lists seven things to watch out for to be full-warned for an economic recession event.

Accoding to MarketWatch, it is important to look at the increase of interest rates in the credit market. Lenders are tightening lending policies because of market troubles. Companies not making any profits is another sign of a recession. Skyrocketing oil prices are also indicators of a recession. Oil prices have big effect on the economy, especially if the economy is experiencing little growth. Oil is not the only one increasing their prices. Prices of essential commodities are also increasing. But the stocks and property prices are going down but nobody is purchasing them.

Housing problems and foreclosures are also clear indicators. Foreclosures happen when people and consumers are unable to pay mortgage and finance homes. Borrowers are failing to pay back loans for homes, vehicles, businesses and credit cards. Even banks and credit unions are missing out payments for their financial obligations due to borrowers unable to repay their loans.

There is also a relative increase of people truing to pay their bills with credit cards. Credit card purchase is increasing. This means that people are having problems paying cash. Using credit card to pay for loans despite excessive interest rate shows desperation.

Consumer spending or making sure that the money from the consumers return to the economy is also something to check. Government intervention in economic crisis resulting to fruitless efforts can also be a warning.

There is also a relative increase of unemployed people. During an event of a recession, companies tend to release workers due to low production demand. Low production demand means lesser income for the company owners. Companies and firms are then obliged to release employees to reach the target income. For the last seven years, unemployment has been rising steadfast in the United States. Overall employment, which is still high is historical terms, is declining since the start of 2008.

So how can ordinary people foresee recession?

AOL listed some interesting real life indicators that we are experiencing economic recession. People are stealing not only the whole car but different car parts from vehicles in parking lots. An example is a catalytic converter, which helps the car’s emissions. Meanwhile, inside retail stores, lesser people are shopping for merchandises. They are now opting for wholesale store membership.

Personal and family affairs, like weddings, are also being regulated in terms of guests and food. While corporations are cutting back on country club memberships and out of town travels.

Car companies are having difficulties getting buyers even with lots of incentives. Suddenly, the most popular restaurants in town does not have any waiting list at all. Small and local business are closing because they can’t keep up with the expenditure.

There can be countless ways of figuring out if a nation is suffering from a setback like an economic recession. But if these signs can be immediately detected and can give us a hint on our economic and financial future, then we should be better learn how to read the signs. Or we might not have the future.

The fall of some social networking sites

May 2, 2009 by Bobbie McKee

In recent years online dating websites have evolved into a more friendly kind of website. Instead of looking for dates over the net people call it social networking, social networking websites work by adding to your friends list people who fit your criteria of being interesting. Some websites have people search engines that allow you to look for possible candidates by just choosing the kind of profile you want your new friend to have. These criteria can be narrowed down to age, sex, nationality, interests, major, sometimes even sexual preference. After you’ve found a handful of candidates you send them invites for them to approve your request to be their friends.

It’s been quite a hit for the children of the Information age, people can now expand their friends network without having to leave the comfort of their homes. On the other hand, with the success of social networking websites, some of the reasons for the failure of other social networking websites have been undermined and overlooked. Even though it a great hit to people, the reasons for others failure if not taken seriously could lead to the downfall of other top websites. Here’s a short list of the major reasons why some social networking websites fail.

1. Privacy. One of the most common downfalls of social networking sites is the lack of privacy of the members. Since all of the information of the member can be viewed by another user the security issue not only of its members but the website itself is regularly in jeopardy. Hackers will always be a threat to people on the internet and especially to people who proactively volunteer information that can be considered as confidential. This information when in the wrong hands can lead to serious backlashes. One example is identity theft; if someone was to intercept a meeting or important information that person could pose as the user.

2. Rewards and penalties. One of the most important things to consider when you are applying for membership to a certain group is the “WIIFM” or “What’s in it for me?” In certain cases when we look into the different groups that we could be part of we always take time to consider how it could benefit us. Benefit and reward are important to people because it gives then a sense of appreciation.

Appreciating that they took time to enroll themselves in a service or a product, when people are given due credit for what they do they feel they belong. On the other hand penalties should be imposed to people who have broken special privileges that they have. These two give any organization balance and direction, this reminds people that they are rewarded for what they do and reprimanded for the abuse that they commit.

3. Hidden privileges. It’s important to that we could have all the privileges and capacities of the network from day one.

4. It takes a while. The main reason that we join a social networking website is to stay connected with people we have little or no communication lines with, when a social networking site takes time to update the users profile or the site it’s frustrating because we want information real time.

5. Boxed worlds. Some people calls social networking sites as “walled gardens” and while others call it “isolated paradise.” Whatever you want to call it social networking websites lessens real interaction between people. Social networking sites were originally made to renew connections with people that we know and make new friends. It was not meant to be the only world that we spend our lives in.

People who have Facebook and MySpace accounts sometimes forget that the true essence of having a relationship.

Defining an Economic Recession

April 30, 2009 by Bobbie McKee

[I:http://www.w3buck.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/BobbieMcKee1.jpg]The United States has been experiencing economic recession since early of the year 2008. Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania are also at risk of facing economic recession for the next 12 months. While Canada, Britain and Japan may foresee a recession in their economy in the future.

With all this recession risks, ordinary people, could not help but wonder what exactly is an economic recession.

The economic cycle is that when an economy is strong, people are employed and earning. There will be a great demand for outputs like food, electronics, vehicles and other products. The production will increase until it exceeds the actual demand. This would create a rise in prices or inflation.

Salary would then have difficulty accommodating the rising prices of products. The prices will be too expensive for consumers, that they will stop buying or sales would not increase. When the demand decreases, companies will lay off workers creating a large population of unemployed work force.

These are several signs of an economic recession. Decline in housing prices, decline in the stock market, and business expansion plans being put on hold are also signs of a recession.

According to the United States National Bureau of Economic Research, it is “a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real GDP, real income, employment, industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales.”

Economic recession is a contraction phase of the business cycle. The common definition for recession is that there is a relative decline in a country’s gross domestic product or GDP. Having a negative real economic growth for two or more successive quarters is also a telltale sign for economic recession.

Gross domestic product is the market value of all the products and services produced in a region or commonly, country, in a year. GDP is the total output of the economy. GDP is measured every quarter. Since the gross domestic product or the output is declining. There is less need for people who are creating the product. Firms and companies will sever their ties with several employees resulting to unemployment.

A severe or long recession could be an economic depression. The difference between recession and depression is when the GDP is declining by 10%, that means what the economy is experiencing is already depression. A short -lived recession is often called economic correction.

Based on the definition of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), recession can last “more than a few months.” Therefore, an official announcement that a country or region is experiencing recession can only be made after economic decline for six months. Typically, a normal economic recession lasts for approximately one year.

Periodic recessions are part of a country’s or region’s economy. According to Tom Harris (How Recession Works), the United States has an economic pattern. The United States economy will expand for six until ten years and then enter a recession for about six months or two years. The start of the recession is called the peak, end of recession if trough. Meanwhile the period of time between two peaks or two recessions is called the business cycle.

NBER, a private, non profit research organization studies the American economy. The Business Cycle Dating Committee maintains the chronology of business cycle. They also decides whether the economy is in recession or expansion

Economists may argue with the definition of an economic recession. They may even debate whether the United States, specifically is experiencing an economic downturn. But it is not only the economists who can decide and identify an economic downfall, it is the ordinary people who can readily identify economic growth and demise.

How Can You Survive During an Economic Recession

[I:http://www.w3buck.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/BobbieMcKee1.jpg]An economic slowdown can happen at any time so you should be prepared for it. Here a few tips so you don’t get caught with your pants down until things get better.

1. If you are in debt, get out as quickly as possible. If you need help, see if you can consult with a financial adviser who can help set your budget for you.

2. You should also switch your bills to cheaper services. This includes electricity, gas, mobile phone, television broadband packages, insurance and maybe even your bank account.

3. There should also be cuts in daily spending. If you buy a lot in the grocery, see to it that you finish whatever there is first before you decide to replenish it. If there are items in promo, buy them instead of what you buy usually because they could be just as good or even better than what you are used to getting.

4. See if you can get free samples. This may sound silly but you are sure to find a few every time you visit the grocery. You can also cut out some vouchers in magazines and then redeem it on your next visit.

5. For those who go to work, instead of going out and having lunch, make it at home then bring it with you to the office. This includes coffee which you can put in a flask if there isn’t any being offered.

6. You should also conserve on energy by lowering your electricity bills and fuel costs. Perhaps you can ask your boss if you can work at home two or three times a week. If this is not possible, see if you can carpool with someone from the office.

7. If you own a large vehicle, perhaps it is time to sell it or trade it in for a smaller one because of better mileage.

8. As for your electricity, see if you can change your light bulbs to those with lower wattage. Perhaps you can also put your heater down by one degree, reinsulated the place or stop drafts coming from the windows and doors.

9. Reducing your expenses are not the only ways to survive an economic recession. You can also make money by selling some stuff in a garage sale or renting out a spare room if there is someone out there who needs a place to stay.

10. If you work in an industry that gets badly hit when cash is tight, perhaps it is time to switch to another career that is more stable.

11. Since that will take some time and you will have to go to school for awhile, you can also engage in some other business on the side like bake cookies or sell some of your vegetables in your garden. Everyone has a niche so you just have to know what it is.

12. The last thing you can do to survive an economic recession is to take advantage of the situation. If you have the money, invest in long term investments so you can sell it when the economy has improved.

An economic recession is a fact of life and this often lasts for months, which is why it is better to be prepared. You should remember that your ability to stay financially stable is the only way you can deal with a potential loss of income and also inflated prices.

The History of the American Economic Recession

April 30, 2009 by Bobbie McKee

[I:http://www.w3buck.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/BobbieMcKee1.jpg]This year, there have been murmurs that the United States is entering, again, into an economic recession. Although the National Bureau of Economic Research still has not release any formal announcement regarding this, American people are starting to experience an economic slowdown and a downturn in their financial and personal life.

This would not be the first time that the United States would experience an economic recession. According to economists, since 1854, the United States has encountered 32 cycles of expansions and contractions (boom and bust). There would be and average of 17 months of contraction an 38 months of expansion. However, since 1980 there have been only eight periods of negative economic growth over one quarter or more.

There were three period considered to recessions:

January- July 1980 and July 1981- November 1982: two years in total July 1990- March 1991: eight months November 2001- November 2002: twelve months

The longest record for an American economic boom was 37 quarters during 1991 until 2000.

The first economic recession happened in 1819. It greatly affected the new nation. After the War of 1812, the American economy was experiencing monetary strains. In 1814, during the term of President Madison, he allowed a replacement of a national bank. This enabled the post-war economy to boom. Although in 1817, there were some financial irregularities and irresponsibility. Americans started buying extravagant amounts of western lands- more than they can afford. The government started selling the land on credit.

On 1819, the government started to demand payment from the loans. During this time, the economy is starting to slow down. The market growth could no longer be sustained, the demands of American products are starting to wane. This led to a wave of bankruptcies and foreclosures. Land owners found themselves unable to pay their government debts and debts in the banks, leading to repossessing of lands.

After the 1817 recession, another recession in 1837 followed. With this recession, in just two months time, the economic decline accumulated to nearly $100,000,000 in value. There were reportedly 343 banks that closed (out of the 850 banks). While 62 banks reported partial failure.

There were recessions that happened in 1857, 1873, 1893 and 1907. The 1907 economic recession was a financial crisis. Nearly 50 percent of the stock market fell from its peak in 1906. It’s primary cause was a retraction of loans by some banks that began in New York City and soon spread into the whole country. The 1907 recession was the fourth recession in 34 years.

The post-World War I recession hit not only the United States but much of the countries globally. Pre-war economy was showing fast economic growth. As a matter of fact, the decade before the war, the world economy was growing record high. After the war, the global economy stated to decline. The sharpest or worst decline was during 1921. the recession was a result of the end of wartime production along with the return of the troops without any employment. Global production was also affected by the war, especially those countries whose industries were shattered by the war.

What followed was known as the Great Depression that occurred from 1929 until 1939. It is the most dramatic, worldwide economic landslide. It affected not only industrialized countries b out also nations who rely in exporting their raw materials. It was the largest and most important economic depression in the world.

Five recessions in the United States followed after the Great Depression. It was the recession during 1953, 1957, early in the 1980s, early during 1990s and early 2000.

The early 2000 economic recession was not felt only in the United States, but was experienced in most Western Countries. The European Union was mostly hit during 2000 and 2001. While the United states was affected mostly during 2002 and 2003.

Optimizing Mind Mapping Contents

[I:http://www.w3buck.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/BobbieMcKee1.jpg]There you have it, your own mind map. But wait, thing is, you wanted people to see this. You wanted them to understand and analyze things the way you see it. Are you sure that your mind mapping contents are enough to be shown? If you wanted to utilize your map to be able to communicate the information you have to other people, you have to review everything critically. Does your idea communicate in an organized and understandable manner or is it still vague to you? If it seems vague, then you have to go back to the drawing board.

It is a rule that when you convey something, you have to understand the information you are giving out or else your name and reputation will be in jeopardy. The ideas should communicate in an unambiguous and clear manner. For someone who is seeing the ideas on your map for the very first time, he or she should make sense out of everything including the hierarchy of importance of the different sub-topics and topics. Your wording and topic must coincide with each other so as not to confuse people who will see it. Neatness should also be maintained.

Whether you like it or not, people are going to barge in their opinions and comments regarding your map. Their judgments will be all based on how you have constructed your map. Their views will be concerned mainly on how they have clearly or vaguely understood the ideas that you have presented. That is why, it is important that you present the kind of appeal that is ideal for them to see.

Below are some tips on how to fully optimize your map in a way that people will appreciate and not criticize.

1. Ask yourself a lot of things. It is through being intuitive that you learn on how to handle your situation. Ask yourself about the map that you have done. Does the entire topic which is connected with some sub-topics co-relate with each other? Or are there ideas that are not really relevant to what you are trying to convey? Be creative enough to move certain topics and put them in place if things are not making sense any longer. You’ll never know it may just make sense at that angle. This process can increase the completeness and value of your map.

2. Collapse the map. Don’t tear it all down just collapse its meaning, you have to shatter the contents of your map in order to achieve topmost topics which are considered as the most important ones and are mainly visible. Look at your map in a holistic way including the central theme and its sub-topics. This will trigger a self-explanatory process.

3. Arrange chronologically. Your primary topics should appear primarily to achieve a logical sequence and logical understanding. If you don’t see things are arranged based on ideas, and then structure your map in a way that will make sense. Don’t leave topics astray around your map.

Remember, as the one projecting the map, you have to have a goal of instilling in the mind of the people who are seeing your mind to see things the way you do because if they are seeing different, then you’re in big trouble.

Furthermore, your mind map should be something that reminds you everything. It should act as a recall instrument and not a thing to ponder on in the long run.
