Twitter has grown over time as social platform and it has gained some real momentum in the past few years. Even more recently, the power of Twitter to generate revenue has been recognized by internet marketing agents, as it is relatively effortless to grow your business by generating a directory of followers. It is very helpful to understand how you can reach the success level you are seeking, and at the same time avoid the typical missteps. Marketers are guilty of making many mistakes on Twitter as they rush to promote their own products. These mistakes are really quite simple to avoid if you know what not to do. For those who intend to work with Twitter for marketing purposes, we will be reviewing the types of missteps that must be avoided, in the following article. We all do mistakes, but it’s how we learn from them that really makes a difference. The nice part is that you can learn from somebody else’s mistakes, rather than making them yourself, which is why I am warning you about them now.

The first and foremost mistake people make when marketing on Twitter is to, well, start with marketing. As funny as it may sound, if you want to see some real results, beginning with a marketing strategy right away is a bad idea. In the initial stages, your focus should on building strong relationships, winning the trust of people and being visible. In other words, you have to literally take permission from your market first before you do any promotion. The question is, though, how to attain this permission? By first becoming involved and neighborly to them on Twitter. In being active in the forum, you will have the opportunity to forge powerful bonds with people, so that after you have gained your audience’s trust, you will be able to utilize Twitter in generating additional visits on your website, creating a database, and gathering more specific sales. But your everyday activity on Twitter should be informal and friendly. Do not be too mercenary and focused on business in your tweets, and don’t turn them into uninteresting advertisements. Marketing is serious business to you, but add some spice and humor to your tweets for the sake of your readers. It is a good idea to be natural and reveal your great personality. If you can manage to do this, you will be helping people in a fun way and they will trust you better. Gaining the trust of your audience is not difficult if you are entertaining and approachable.

The other mistake that you should avoid making is to be all about yourself. Remember, you are trying to build trust with your followers. They need to know what they will get out of their commitment to you. So let them know what their benefits will be, and what they’ll get out of responding to your offer, instead of focussing only on yourself and your product. Remember, in the business of marketing, benefits are more important to your audience than features; you need to make sure they know what they’re getting out of and offer. Also, don’t make the mistake of being too serious; leave that job for other people who want to be boring. Remember to not risk appearing too dull and uninteresting, because your followers on Twitter are normal people who enjoy socializing and having some fun.

Another marketing error that people make when they begin to use Twitter is that they attempt to be a bit too mysterious. If a person cannot figure out what you are selling or what you are doing, then they will ignore you! You have to include a bio that will capture their attention and include a photo of yourself. The first interaction you have with your prospect shouldn’t go in vain just because they couldn’t make you out. Obviously, you should exhibit a sense of humor and whimsy. See, that is yet another of those easy little mistakes that people make what when they start marketing with Twitter. Twitter is a fun internet destination, somewhere where people come together and interact on a social level. Everyone has enough pressure and seriousness in their lives, you don’t want to pile on more. When you Tweet, your messages should be entertaining but not to the point of being off-putting. That will make more people interested in what you have to offer. You really need to punch things up, stay away from dry boring text.

You should always use a real face of the business to represent your business on Twitter. When your prospects see a corporate logo, they feel that you are nothing but your business, and won’t even take a look at what you have to offer. You want to encourage them to identify with you, and the best way to do that is to be you, not just your brand. Your brand should be represented by a human personality that breathes life into your campaign. This may take some extra time and thought, but it will be worthwhile in the long run because people will respond favorably knowing that you are a real person. It’s important not to come off as a snob. No, don’t do that mistake on Twitter; it’ll cost you your reputation. It is a social platform that needs to be respected for what it is. When you interact with other Twitterers you need to speak with a personable tone so that you can really connect. Avoid being a promotional robot. Genuinely listen to what problems they have and if you can, give them a real solution. Your best marketing can be done on Twitter by instead serving others.
